Libraries or Laboratories ?
Both But Why Stop There? For some the debate on learning environment continues but we have known for years that you need libraries and laboratories equally but the real secret is that you get everything else in between.
We Are Different. The Terra Firma Institute believes that the teaching environment is just as important as the course material and the skill of the instructor. Students deserve a classroom atmosphere where their teachers organize the common space in rich possibilities and provocations that invite them to explore and feel safe. History’s great works of art, modern maps and natural curiosities inspire children to think about the world they live in. Group and personal coursework is important for every educational experience and too often modern classrooms allow no space for such work or imagination. Instead the brain is stifled and board, discouraged children are falsely diagnosed with attention disorders that most do not actually have. Many modern classrooms are sterile, colorless and drab in design.
Modern School Grounds Are Even Worse. A landscape virtually treeless and barren leaves little room for imagination. School grounds look more like barracks or stables than places for young minds to grow. This is a tragedy for the environment and for our children. Most modern school grounds are insultingly ugly.
Design Is Language. School doesn’t have to be an ugly place. Interior design is a universal language that communicates subtle or overt messages. Good design can completely change how a room is perceived and even make the difference between a good and bad experience. If done properly a room can teach just as much as the best professors. One just needs to know how to do this.
The Past is Prologue. Brilliant minds of the past knew how to design a room. Every space was special. Every cabinet had its curiosities. We look to the great naturalists and eccentric minds of the past for inspiration and then take it to completely new heights. Exotic use of practical color, line of sight, museum displays, live animal exhibits and optical illusions are all just a fraction of tools in our portfolio.
